Choosing Your Piano Style

Grand pianos, upright pianos, or digital pianos - what's the best style of piano for you?

Grand piano

We generally think of pianos as having three primary styles: grand, upright, and digital. While there are many different approaches to piano building, including variations in appointments, finishes, and even mechanics, piano style is most often equated with these three main categories. Each of these styles not only serves a specific aesthetic purpose but also caters to different functional needs and preferences of musicians and enthusiasts alike.

Grand pianos, known for its majestic appearance and rich sound, is often the centerpiece of concert halls and performance spaces. Its horizontal design allows for longer strings and larger soundboards, contributing to a fuller, more resonant tone that is highly sought after by concert pianists.

Upright piano

On the other hand, upright pianos, with its vertical structure, is more compact and practical for home use, making it a popular choice for students and hobbyists. Despite its smaller size, many upright pianos are capable of producing a warm and pleasing sound, although they may lack the dynamic range of their grand counterparts.

Finally, digital pianos have emerged as a modern solution, offering the convenience of portability and a variety of features such as built-in recordings, headphone outputs, and a range of instrument sounds.

Digital piano

These instruments can simulate the feel and sound of acoustic pianos while providing the added benefit of volume control and versatility in various settings. Together, these three styles encompass a broad spectrum of piano design and functionality, highlighting the rich diversity within the world of piano music.
